Homeopathic Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections

What is Urinary Tract Infections?
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are fairly more common in women than in men. The short urethra and its proximity to the anus — where bacteria are present — are the most commonly agreed-on reasons for frequent urinary infections in women.
When the infection is limited to the urethra, it is called Urethritis. When it spreads upward into the bladder it is called Cystitis, and when it progresses further into the kidneys, it is called Pyelonephritis.
The most common bacteria found in infected urine is Escherichia coli (E. coli), which normally resides in the lower digestive tract and spreads to the urinary tract opening when immunity is low or hygiene is not maintained.
Older women past 30 who have had urinary infections tend to develop a tendency for frequent recurrences. Pregnant women are also more prone to UTIs. Other susceptible groups include diabetics and those who have undergone surgeries.
Catheters placed in the urinary tract during surgeries can inadvertently introduce infection, especially in patients who convalesce for a long time. UTIs can also be sexually transmitted, with Chlamydia and Mycoplasma found in such cases.
Symptoms
- A nagging feeling of 'not feeling alright' and heaviness of the head
- Body pains and heaviness of the abdomen
- Frequent urge to urinate, passing small quantities of 'hot' urine
- Burning pain while passing urine
- Cloudy or milky urine
- Feeling of pressure or heaviness over the lower pelvis (women) or rectum (men)
- Fever with the above symptoms — always indicates the infection has spread into the kidneys and must be attended to immediately
Causes
- Escherichia coli (E. coli) from the digestive tract spreading to the urinary tract
- Low immunity or poor hygiene
- Frequent fevers and use of strong antibiotics for other disorders
- Dehydration
- Auto-immune disorders
- Blockages to normal urine flow — kidney stones, bladder stones, or prostate enlargement
- Diabetes
- Catheters placed during surgery
- Sexual transmission (Chlamydia, Mycoplasma)
Homeopathic Treatment Approach
Homeopathic remedies offer a safe, quick alternative to strong antibiotics for urinary tract infections. Commonly used remedies are:
Aconite Nap
Indicated when the onset of symptoms is sudden with associated anxiety. There is so much pain that the patient occasionally screams, passing small quantities of red urine with constant pain in the bladder region. The patient sweats profusely with the pains.
Apis Mel
Indicated when there is a burning urge to pass urine. Urine is filled with membranous material and there are stinging pains while urinating. There is incontinence and the last drops burn.
Belladonna
Bloody urine is a marked symptom. Sensation as if there are worms in the bladder. Urine is always dark, turbid, and scanty. There is painful incontinence with no control over passing urine.
Cantharis
Indicated with irritation of the urethra and a painful desire to pass small quantities of 'hot' urine frequently. Urine passed is bloody with severe pain before, during, and after urination. Occasional passage of membranes in the urine.
Sarsaparilla
Indicated in infants who scream while passing urine. Also indicated when there is gravel in the urine and severe pain at the conclusion of urination. The bladder feels distended, with pain especially in the right kidney area extending downward.
